My Romanian adventure

What an amazing time these last two weeks have been.  WPPI in Vegas and then three days of sharing with the Romanian wedding photography community.  They think that they are the only ones affected by below average photographers diluting the market with inferior work at very low prices.  It was a dream come true for me to present at WPPI and it looks like they will be inviting me to speak again next year.  Thanks so much to Jim and Arlene for the wonderful reception.  I learned so much in Vegas, information that will elevate my business to new heights – Thanks to all the presenters that give so freely of their time and energy to uplift this amazing industry.  Bucharest was a blast – I presented to 3250 photographers and had such positive feedback and a genuine appreciation for the knowledge shared.  Thanks so much to Geo and Violeta for putting so much effort into helping the Romania photographic community grow and progress. You really go beyond merely being a supplier to an industry to partnering with photographers to realize a sustainable and profitable relationship in the long term.  Very refreshing to see the commitment to your clients.  Thanks to all the keen students that spent the whole of Sunday learning and building your brand.  I will never forget the special time we had as well as the incredible meal we shared at Caru' cu Bere

Lighting DVD

Had a great afternoon shooting part of my upcoming lighting DVD, Captured some really nice images of two beautiful little sisters, Olivia and Roxy. Wedding workshop London 10-12 August

I am happy to be back in London during August and will be hosting a Wedding Photography Workshop at Browns from the 10-12th August

The "Nikon Behind the Lens Wedding Workshop" is a fully intensive 3 day workshop covering everything from marketing and shooting the wedding, to post production. It is an interactive course with me, Brett Florens, which will include live shoots using models at a simulated wedding. I will give you close personal attention regarding your portfolio and marketing material.

This has been an amazing week! Yesterday I had a fantastic interview with Scott Sheppard from Nik Radio, we chatted in depth about so many different topics – The interview will be available on iTunes next week some time. I then had a Skype call with Hayo Baan from the Nikonians Academy in Europe, he has asked me to head up all their European Wedding Workshops for the Academy.  I am really excited about the potential of workshops throughout Europe. To Top it all off there was a piece on the Wonderbra shoot on National TV this morning!

I have just wrapped two days of shooting for Wonderbra. The heat is on looking for the new Wonderbra Model - Thanks to a great team for a fantastic shoot!

Shooting in December's rainy season!!

So we have had a very wet December and a lot of us have been really busy with weddings and family shoots as all the UK based South Africans come home for the "Sunshine" and to be with family over Christmas.  Not ideal for us, because December doesn't have the greatest reputation for great weather.  Shooting in tricky weather conditions can prove to be challenging, but see it as an opportunity to produce images that the client would never expect.  Look for light in places that you wouldn't ordinarily expect to find light. Whatever you do -  don't panic and let you client see that you are stressing about the weather.  When you do manage to get great images in poor conditions, show the client on your LCD, this will lift their spirits and get them to be more co-operative, resulting in better results. In the following images I have used an off camera flash(Ranger or your speedlights) to create  great backlit images in the rain.  The couple were covered with an umbrella right up to the point where I am ready to fire.

In the next image I looked for great light indoors, obviously it helps to have the right gear as I shot this on a D3s  4000 iso @ f2.8 1/160sec.  Having the 70-200 2.8 was essential as it is not only good for shooting in low light, but is has a shallow depth of field making this image look like it was shot for a fashion spread.  I found a wonderful spot in a passage with a skylight pouring available light all over Kirsty, the Bride.

Shooting in December's rainy season!!

December was a very challenging month weather wise. Although we have longer days there are often late afternoon showers and then there's extreme humidity, wreaking havoc with make-up and senses of humour. I shot a great wedding at Tala where the rain was threatening all day and finally arrived just before the ceremony.... Shooting the Bridal party after the ceremony proved to be tricky, but thanks to the Ranger I managed to pull it off. Whilst setting up for the shoot I realised that I had left one of my Pocket Wizzards back in the studio. I managed to trigger the Ranger with my SB900 but battled when I wanted to use it as backlighting as line of sight was an issue. Sam my assistant suggested using my other SB900 as the "Middle Man", this image was the first shot from the test - the bride was ecstatic and I was relieved and amazed at the result - Thanks Sam!

Back from The States

Been back from the States for around two weeks - What an amazing trip, shot a wedding in New York and then ran the NYC Marathon, an unbelievable experience!  We then flew across to San Francisco to meet the Marketing director for Lowepro Sam Marsh, a wonderful person, who was leaving the next day to photograph Polar Bears(so jealous)  - Now that is a beautiful city!!

From there we drove down to meet Bill Hurter from WPPI and Rangefinder fame, one of the most selfless people around! Stay at a friend Jason's house on Malibu Beach, it was surreal!!

Got back to SA and hit the ground running, with a Wedding Workshop in Johannesburg - Thanks to Jacques Weyers for the inspiration for this shot, shot using cellophane to create this image.

The Photo-Film Expo

Wow - I am exhausted!!  What a great weekend!  Thanks so much to all of you for coming to chat, I had a lot of fun.  Getting back to the office this morning was really weird - so quiet!  Three weeks to go and then off to New York for a wedding and the NY Marathon,  but most importantly my visit to B&H!!

The London sessions

I have just picked up the completed discs of my new DVD - "The London Sessions" from the editors,  It was an exhausting process, but well worth it!  Elysia, the editor worked tirelessly and managed to create a great product - Thanks so much! Brett Florens' Guide to Photographing Weddings Available 6 October

I have just heard that my book has landed in Buffalo New York and will be available next week.  It has taken four years to create and this is so surreal for me - Thanks so much to all at Amherst that made this possible!  Thanks to Bill Hurter of Rangefinder for your support, but most importantly to Andrea, my wife for being there from the beginning.  I will have it on sale at the Photo and Film Expo in JHB from the 15-17 October, if you are around come and see me at the Nikon Booth,  I am so excited!!

I am unforgettable

After the Bedlam of the London trip, I thought that I would come back to a relaxed laid-back Durban, not so!  The editing of the DVD is going really well and should be ready for the Photo and Film expo, but some really exciting news is that my book has landed in NY and I will have copies available in JHB for the expo.  On another note I just received my copy of Nikon Pro Magazine - I wrote a small piece on the state of the industry and it is featured in the mag - how amazing is that!

Nikon have used one of my pics in their - "I am" campaign, this is seriously the biggest highlight of my career!  Thank you to all at Nikon!

Just got back from a busy European Summer

Just got back from a great European Summer - Amazing wedding in Spain that got me a Hello magazine cover - very cool!!

Shot 250 families and  a cracker ad campaign for Mitchell's and Butler!  It was a very productive time and amazing to be in the thick of it!  I was fortunate enough to be interviewed by Nikon Pro magazine for their summer publication.  I recorded the Wedding Workshop in London so now have 20 hours of footage to edit before 10 October!  I will be at the Photo and film expo in JHB from the 15-17 October so if you are around it will be cool to hook up!
